Editing Project: A Day at Home

Remember your project from the shooting section? Now it?s time to edit! Use the planning sheet you made for shooting for this section too. Come up with a primitive idea of your shot order and sequence on paper.
Steps: (Refer to related lessons for each step)
1- Clean up your hard drive to make at least 7-8 GB free space for your project.
2- Create a directory on your hard drive to put all the video files in it.
3- Create a new project. 4- Create different folders in Media window to organize your clips like Videos, Titles, Music, Photo, etc.
5- In the Video folder you should create sub folders to organize your video clips. It is better to create video folders in a sequential order (the order the video clips would be appear in your video.) For example, if you want to edit exterior, interior and family activity, then you organize the clips into Exterior, Interior and Activity folders. You can always change your order in the middle of the edit and borrow video clips from a different folder for a specific part of the video (e.g edit all the exterior shots, then all the interiors and at them end of interior shot another exterior shot.)
6- Start capturing your video. Watch the video first. Do not capture the parts that you think you won?t need in your final video. Properly name the group of video clips.
7- Organize the video clips into your folders.
8- Watch the clips in different folders. Arrange the clips. If you have big chunks in some video clips that you know that you won?t use in your video for sure, trim their video clips.
9- Select the video clips in folders (based on the time sequence that they should appear in your video) and import them to the timeline. (Do not put too many clips on the timeline at once.)
10- Cut and trim your shots. As mentioned before, try to make your video brief. Delete the repeated or unnecessary shots.
11- Watch the video on the timeline and rearrange the shots if necessary.
12- Use the video transitions and effects effectively on your clips. Remember to not use too many transitions or effects.
13- Repeat video editing steps until you have the completed shots on your timeline. Try to use the tips you have learned about editing in previous lessons. Do not forget to save your project frequently. Out of 25 minutes of raw video at the beginning, you should have no more than 10 to 15 minutes of edited video at the end.
14- Import some photos from your family/friends. Edit some of them among your shots. Create a photo slideshow at the end of your video.
15- Add a title to the beginning of your video. At the end of your video add a title and name all the people who appeared on the video. You may also need to add some titles in middle of the edited video, overlaid on video clips if needed.
16- Sound Editing:
- Add Crossfade effect to audio clips to smooth the video sound.
- Import and add music to parts of your edited video. Do not use too much music. Appropriate places to use music are on the beginning title, end title and in the middle when you show, for example, the exterior of your house or apartment.
- Mix the sound and level your audio tracks. Add key frames if needed.
