Editing Project: One Day at Home

Remember your project from the shooting section? Now it?s time to edit! You can approach this project in two ways: A- Capture and organize the whole video (25 minutes or less), then edit. B- Capture, organize and edit the video in 5-minute chunks and repeat this process several times. Use the planning sheet you made for shooting for this section too. Come up with a primitive idea of your shot order and sequence on paper.
Steps:(Refer to related lessons for each step)
1. Clean up your hard drive to make at least 6-7 GB free space for your project.
2. Create a directory on your hard drive to put all the video files in it.
3. Create different collection folders to organize your clips like Exteriors, Interiors, Family activities etc.
4. Create a new project.
5. Start capturing your video. Watch the video first. Do not capture the parts that you think you won't need in your final video.
6. Organize the video clips into your collections.
7. Watch the clips. Some shots are combined in one clip, split them
8. Video Editing: a. Arrange your clips on the storyboard. Do not put more than 5 minutes of video clips on the timeline at once. Refer to your planning sheet to order your shots. For example, you can decide whether to have the exterior or interior shots first. Another alternative could be to create a mix of both types of video clips on the storyboard. Watch the composition and rearrange the clips if needed. b. Switch to timeline mode and trim your shots. As mentioned before, try to make your video brief. Delete the repeated or unnecessary shots. c. Use the video transitions and effects effectively on your clips. Remember to not use too many transitions or effects.
9. Repeat video editing steps until you have the completed shots on your timeline. Try to use the tips you have learned about editing in previous lessons. Do not forget to save your project frequently. Out of 25 minutes of raw video at the beginning, you should have no more than 10 to 15 minutes of edited video at the end.
10. Import some photos from your family/friends. Edit them among your shots
11. Add a title to the beginning of your video. At the end of your video add a title and name all the people who appeared on the video. You may also need to add some titles in middle of the edited video, overlaid on video clips if needed.
12. Sound Editing: a. Listen to your edited video. If some of the shots are too loud, adjust their sound level. b. Narrate your video. Do not narrate on the whole edited video. Just 3-4 minutes of narration on different parts is OK. Edit and re-record the narration if needed. c. Import and add music to parts of your edited video. Do not use too much music. Appropriate places to use music are on the beginning title, end title and in the middle when you show, for example, the exterior of your house or apartment.
Congratulations! Your video is ready to watch. Now you just need to learn how you can prepare it for the show.
